Aztec Cuisine

Aztec food was rich and spicy. Many of the ancient aztec foods were flavoured with chilli peppers. Most of their food contained meat such as rabbits, geese, ducks and deer. These meats were gained through hunting. They also raised Dogs and Turkeys for meat.

They used maize (corn) for the base of most foods, this was because it was easy to grow and would keep for a long time. Some foods that used maize include xoars, which are balls made from maize dough and filled with chillies beans or meat, and atole which was a thin porridge like food made from maize flour.

The main food of the Aztecs was the tlaxcalli. It was a pancake made from corn meal which is similar to the tortilla we have today. They used it to wrap around meat and vegetables to make tacos.

Some other foods which were popular in the aztec diet were avocados, squash, tomatoes and beans.

Aztecs loved chocolate. One of the most popular foods in the aztec culture was a drink made from chocolate. The drink was a favourite drink that only the wealthy would have often.
